Hiring A Freelancer – Points to Consider
Hiring a freelancer can be a great solution to overload of work, a particular problem or a way of diversifying and offering services beyond your normal scope. However, it also presents some risks; as unfortunately not all who claim the title of ‘freelancer’ are the professionals we take them to be.
Background
Research the freelancer’s background, particularly if you have found them via some Google searching. First off, you should be requesting references and samples of previous work. Some sites that list freelancer’s have a ratings and reviews systems – be sure to explore these.
Documentation is a key thing within business, along with accurate record keeping. A contract is required to protect both yourself and the freelancer. Define what is expected of both parties and when it is expected to be completed for and importantly – how much for! Dependent on the situation, Non-Disclosure Agreements may also be necessary.
What you want
Working with the freelancer, you need to clearly discuss what the project / task is that you want them to complete. Samples of what you like and do not like are good points to use as a reference point. A good freelancer will be actively engaged in this process and prompt you for information and a detailed brief. Discuss what you want, and clearly establish what it is you define as ‘completion’.
Communication
Establish a connection with your freelancer; check in regularly on progress of work and receive / request updates. There are many collaborative / time management websites and software that can help you monitor and engage with your freelancer during the process.
