Internet Explorer 6 – Stop Using The Thing!

January 30, 2010 Google, Marketing, News

Since the Google vs China fiasco of the past month just behind us the pressure from just about everyone has intensified to stop users using IE6 as their browser of choice when modern browsers are available and have been available for quite some time. Google has announced its discontinuation of IE6 support.

The new wave of IE6 hate, erupted when it emerged Google and many other companies had its systems compromised by users who still use IE6. Hopefully, many other ‘big-guns’ can get behind the sentiment; with Google dropping support for IE6 that is definitely a huge step in the right direction. Google comments:

The web has evolved in the last ten years, from simple text pages to rich, interactive applications including video and voice. Unfortunately, very old browsers cannot run many of these new features effectively. So to help ensure your business can use the latest, most advanced web apps, we encourage you to update your browsers as soon as possible. Many other companies have already stopped supporting older browsers like Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers. We’re also going to begin phasing out our support, starting with Google Docs and Google SitesThe good folks at Google

I personally, long abandoned IE^ – there are many other more secure browsers with a more intuitive designs and user experience. Take your pick from the below:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0+

Mozilla Firefox 3.0+

Google Chrome 4.0+

Safari 3.0+
