Review – Malcolm Gladwell – Tipping Point

February 9, 2010 Books, Motivation

The book is on just about every ‘must-read’ business / marketing / leadership reading list that is out there. Familiar with the Gladwell name also, I went in with high expectations, I was not disappointed!

In the Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell provides an overview on the phenomenon of social spread, the underlying reasons that make things travel through groups in a viral manner!

An excerpt from the synopsis:

In this brilliant and original book, Malcolm Gladwell explains and analyses the ‘tipping point’, that magic moment when ideas, trends and social behaviors cross a threshold, tip and spread like wildfire. Taking a look behind the surface of many familiar occurrences in our everyday world, Gladwell explains the fascinating social dynamics that cause rapid changeThe Tipping Point

The Tipping Point precedes and presents ways of interpreting what factors have contributed to a certain epidemic or trend. The title is one of those great books that motivates and changes the way you think about the world around you. Gladwell makes a big idea (the science of fads and epidemics) fascinating and easily digestible, drawing from a diverse array of examples – from Hush puppies to AIDS, crime to yawning!

I think the book is invaluable; particularly for those of us in business and management. Us, who are in positions where at some point we will be required to effect change.  As with similar books, the ideas may have been around for a while but the skill is making them accessible, and in a format where you learn, explore and go away with the will to influence.
