January 26, 2010 Social Media, Twitter

Twitter is a networking platform that allows you to publish short messages of less than 140 characters to your twitter profile.

Twitter is a very social website because as you build the number of people ‘following’ your short messages – they begin to interact and respond. Similarly, you should also be building the number of people who you are following. The tool, thus allows for an element of community and allows users to interact and form new relationships. To get yourself up to date, Mashable have a brilliant twitter guidebook that even the experienced tweeter can find advice in.

Networking

Building a network of ‘followers’ and people you follow and monitor yourself, allows you to quickly develop a huge network of professionals and like-minded individuals that ordinarily may take 100′s of years of networking events to establish. Thus, twitter lends itself to seeking professionals in a field by simply publishing a short message to the effect of ‘ Does  anybody know a good ‘plumber’ ‘ etc Answers are automatic recommendations or pitches for your work – giving you faith in the professional.

Driving Traffic

If you have a website, blog, youtube series, online tv show, flickr account etc etc – twitter can be an invaluable tool in driving traffic to that place. By no means commit the cardinal sin of spamming those that follow your updates with continual links to your site but systematic, periodic and specific updates when something of value is there for your for values can be a great way to drive traffic. Furthermore, the better the quality of the place you send your followers to the more likely they are to ‘re-tweet’ this link and send it to those that follow them – which is how things can spread in a viral nature on twitter.

Brand Perception

As a professional , one should always be looking to market themselves effectively. As a social media arena, twitter is a great way to grow the strength of your personal brand / company identity. By interacting with users on twitter – you get to control how your brand is perceived. Brand perception is a consideration, one should take more than seriously – twitter allows you to connect with your potential leads on a more personal basis than blanket advertising campaigns etc.

Feedback

From this, it then follows that as you connect with users and establish relationships – they will comment and respond to you. Receiving feedback on anything we do is essential to development and progression. Asking your ‘followers’ how they feel about a price / product / event / website is an invaluable way to engage them and evolve your strategies.

Keep Your Clients Up To Date

During the recent snow blizzard that struck the UK, Eurotunnel kept passengers up to date about service times, delays and cancellations via Facebook and Twitter. They provided real time up dates that could be seen from a mobile for the savvy iphone / smartphone / blackberry users. Whilst, it is debatable how many of their passengers use twitter it nevertheless was a way in which the company portrayed its commitment to keeping passengers informed and in the know a sentiment which if anything helped them come across in the best possible light during the chaos.

Twitter is a simple concept social media tool that gives its savvy users a multi-faceted tool to use in their arsenal.
